What is a Live Scan background check?
LiveScan is a device that electronically takes your fingerprints and other information, then uploads that information to the FDLE (Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement) who in turn sends them to the FBI for a fingerprint background check.
Live Scan digital fingerprinting is the process that replaces traditional ink fingerprinting.
An applicant’s fingerprints are securely transmitted to a government agency, which performs a criminal history background check using an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
Why do I need one?
Depending on your occupation, the Florida State Legislature and several Florida State Agencies require it to ensure the safety and security of Florida’s children, elderly and general public.
Live Scan fingerprinting refers to both the technique and the technology used by law enforcement agencies and private facilities to capture fingerprints and palm prints electronically, without the need for the more traditional method of ink and paper.
Livescan fingerprinting is done in a similar fashion to the old ink and paper method. The finger is placed and rolled over a silicon pad and the print is digitally captured into a computer. With no ink and no mess. The computer encrypts the data, then sends the information and the prints to the FDLE then to the FBI, or we can print the fingerprints on a standard FBI FD258 fingerprint card.
Florida requires potential employees who’ll come in contact with children, the elderly and the mentally or physically challenged, to be live scan fingerprinted for a level 2 background check. Florida also requires many professional license holders to have a level 2 livescan background check.
The results are usually returned to FDLE and the regulating agency within 24 to 72 hours. It then may take several days for the agencies to have the results posted. It is VERY IMPORTANT to have the correct ORI number and agency ID number to prevent delays.
